AMISH BAKED CUSTARD.

Ingredients:

  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 cups hot water
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Nutmeg for garnish

Preparation:

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat the oven to 325°F.
  2. Prepare Milk Mixture:
    • In a large glass or metal bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk with hot water.
  3. Prepare Egg Mixture:
    • In a separate bowl, beat the eggs until they become light in color and fluffy in texture. To temper the eggs, pour a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the eggs, then combine them fully. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
  4. Assemble and Bake:
    • Pour the combined mixture into ramekins or use a 2-quart baking dish.
    • Place the ramekins or dish on a baking pan with high sides. Add water to the pan, filling it to about half an inch.
  5. Baking Time:
    • Bake for approximately 1 hour or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. If using a larger baking dish, bake for about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
  6. Cooling and Serving:
    • Allow the custard to cool for about 1 hour.
    • Sprinkle the custard with nutmeg before serving. It can be served warm or refrigerated to serve chilled.
