Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
Yield: 12-16 pieces
Category: Bread
Method: Frying
Cuisine: Native American
Ingredients
- 3 cups of flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups hot water
- Frying oil
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Add Hot Water: Add the hot water to the dry ingredients and stir with a spoon. The dough will be sticky.
- Form Dough: Form the dough into a ball and cover it. Let it rest for 45 minutes.
- Divide into Balls: After resting, divide the dough into 12-16 balls.
- Shape into Circles: Using your palms and fingertips, press each ball of dough into a circle. Use your fingertips to stretch it into a thin, round circle about 4-5 inches in diameter.
- Heat Frying Oil: Heat frying oil in a frying pan over medium/high heat until it’s hot and shimmering.
- Fry the Frybread: Carefully add one piece of frybread at a time to the hot oil. Fry until it turns golden brown, then flip it over. This usually takes about a minute on each side, but the cooking time may vary depending on the temperature of the oil.
- Remove and Drain: Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried frybread from the oil and place it on paper towels to drain any excess oil.
- Serve: Enjoy your delicious Indian Frybread as a side dish or with your favorite toppings.
