Total Time: 1 hour

Pastry Ingredients:

  • ½ cup cold water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup chilled shortening

Apple Filling Ingredients:

  • 2 medium apples
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup white sugar

Instructions:

  1. Mix the sifted salt and flour. Add shortening and mix with a pastry blender until a coarse crumbs mixture is achieved.
  2. Moisten the flour mixture with 1 tablespoon of water and mix with a fork. Form a ball from the moist mixture, cover it with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Dice the peeled apples and place them in a saucepan. Add cinnamon and sugar, toss to coat the apples. Cover the saucepan and cook over low heat until soft. Mash the softened apples with a fork until it becomes a thick applesauce. Let it cool.
  4. Sprinkle flour on the work surface and place the dough on it. Roll out the dough and use a large cookie cutter to cut it into approximately 4-inch diameter rounds.
  5. Moisten the edges with cold water. Place 1 tablespoon of fruit filling in each round. Fold in half and seal by pressing the edges with a fork. Repeat with the remaining rounds.
  6. Heat oil in a large saucepan to 190 degrees Celsius (375 degrees Fahrenheit).
  7. Carefully place the pies into the hot oil and fry each side for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Drain the fried pies on paper towels.
  9. Serve and enjoy your delicious fried apple pies.
