Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers are a mouthwatering delight, featuring golden caramelized onions embedded into perfectly cooked beef patties.
This recipe is adapted from Cook’s Country, and the key to its deliciousness lies in the smashing of thinly sliced onions into the ground beef before cooking. Enjoy these burgers with sliced Cheddar cheese on homemade hamburger buns for an unforgettable taste experience.
Ingredients:
- 1 large onion, peeled, halved, and thinly sliced
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 lb ground beef (93% lean)
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 4-8 slices American cheese
- Mayo, mustard, and pickles, for serving
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
Instructions:
Preparing the Onions:
- Cut the onion in half, pole to pole, and slice it into 1/8-inch slices.
- Toss the sliced onions with 1 teaspoon of salt in a bowl. Transfer them to a colander and let them sit for 30 minutes, tossing occasionally.
- Transfer the onions to a clean dish towel, gather the edges together, and squeeze out as much liquid as possible from the onions. Do this over the sink or a large bowl, as the onions will release a significant amount of liquid.
Making the Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers:
- Divide the squeezed onions into four separate mounds on a rimmed baking sheet.
- Form the ground beef into four lightly packed balls and place each ball on top of an onion mound.
- Use your palm to firmly flatten the ground beef into the onions, ensuring that the onions adhere to the beef. The patties should measure approximately 4 inches in diameter.
- Season the beef patties generously with salt and pepper.
Cooking the Burgers:
- In a 12-inch skillet, melt the butter with the vegetable oil over medium heat.
- Carefully transfer each burger, onion side down, into the skillet using a large spatula.
- Cook the burgers for 6-8 minutes until the onions turn a deep golden brown and start to crisp around the edges.
- Flip the burgers, increase the heat to high, and cook for an additional 2 minutes or until well browned on the second side.
- Add 1 or 2 slices of American cheese to each burger and allow it to melt.
- Toast the hamburger buns and spread mayo, mustard, and pickles on the top buns.
- Place each burger on a bottom bun and serve immediately.
Enjoy these scrumptious Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers, a delightful twist on a classic favorite.
