  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • vanilla ice cream (optional for serving)

  • whisk or mixing spoon
  • Peeler and knife

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Combine apples, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and lemon juice in a large bowl. Mix well.
  3. In another bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and brown sugar.
  4. Combine melted butter and milk, then stir into the dry mixture lightly.
  5. Grease the baking dish and add the apple filling evenly.
  6. Spoon topping batter over apples and gently smooth.
  7. Sprinkle nutmeg over the top.
  8. Bake for 40–45 minutes until golden and bubbly around edges.
  9. Let rest 10–15 minutes before serving.

Notes

You may use frozen apples—just thaw and drain first. Brown sugar in the topping adds a caramel-like richness. Add nuts for extra crunch. Best served warm, especially with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
