Ingredients

  • 6 cups apples (peeled, cored, and sliced)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter (cold, cubed)
  • 0.5 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Large mixing bowls
  • wooden spoon or spatula
  • pastry cutter or fork
  • measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, sugars, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spread evenly into the baking dish.
  3. In another bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in nuts if using.
  4. Sprinkle topping evenly over apples.
  5. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until topping is golden brown and filling is bubbly.
  6. Let sit for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of vanilla extract to the apple filling.
  • Double the recipe for larger gatherings.
  • If topping starts browning too quickly, cover loosely with foil halfway through baking.
