Ingredients

  • 1 pound frozen or homemade meatballs (use lean meat or plant-based alternatives)
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (add garlic, butter, or cream cheese for extra flavor)
  • 1 cup brown gravy (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend)
  • salt and pepper, to taste

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • mixing bowl
  • spoon or spatula
  • oven mitts

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange frozen or homemade meatballs evenly in the prepared dish.
  3. Pour warm brown gravy over the meatballs, coating them evenly.
  4. Spoon mashed potatoes over the meatballs and spread evenly to cover.
  5. Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the mashed potatoes.
  6. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until cheese is melted, golden, and bubbly.
  7. Let the bake rest for 5–10 minutes before serving to allow layers to settle.
  8. Optional: Add sautéed vegetables beneath the mashed potatoes for extra color and nutrition.

Notes

If using homemade meatballs, cook them first before layering. For extra creaminess, mix sour cream or butter into your mashed potatoes. This casserole also freezes beautifully — assemble, wrap, and freeze before baking.
