Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

  • two 9-inch round cake pans
  • mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer or hand whisk
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • Wire cooling racks

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter until smooth. Gradually add sugar and continue beating until fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients, alternating with milk, and mix until just combined.
  6. Divide batter evenly into prepared pans.
  7. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks. Allow to cool completely before frosting.

Notes

  • For added richness, use Dutch-processed cocoa powder.
  • Always allow cakes to cool fully before frosting to prevent melting.
  • Double the recipe if making a layered celebration cake.
