For those who enjoy a hearty and comforting meal, Stuffed Cabbage Rolls are a delightful option. They offer a perfect blend of meat, rice, and savory tomato sauce all wrapped in tender cabbage leaves—a classic dish that many would savor!

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium head cabbage (about 3 pounds)
  • 1/2 pound ground beef, uncooked
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce, divided
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup long-grain rice, uncooked
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh dill, snipped
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar

Directions:

  1. Prep Cabbage:
    • Cook the whole head of cabbage in boiling water for a few minutes until the outer leaves are soft enough to peel off. Carefully remove 12 large leaves and set them aside.
  2. Prepare Filling:
    • In a bowl, mix together the ground beef, 1/2 cup of tomato sauce, chopped onion, uncooked rice, parsley flakes, salt, dill, and cayenne pepper until well combined.
  3. Assemble Rolls:
    • Trim the thick vein from the bottom of each cabbage leaf, making a V-shape cut to make them easier to roll.
    • Place about 1/4 cup of the meat mixture on each cabbage leaf. Fold in the sides and roll up from the cut end, making sure the filling is enclosed.
  4. Layer the Base:
    • Thinly slice the remaining cabbage and spread it on the bottom of a Dutch oven or a large baking dish.
  5. Arrange Rolls:
    • Place the cabbage rolls seam side down on top of the sliced cabbage.
  6. Prepare Sauce:
    • Combine the diced tomatoes with their juice, the remaining tomato sauce, and sugar. Mix well.
  7. Bake:
    • Pour the tomato mixture over the cabbage rolls.
    • Cover the Dutch oven and bake at 350°F for approximately 1-1/2 hours, or until the cabbage rolls are cooked through and tender.
